Strong, highly functional, and durable—though slightly notorious for lower mileage, low profile tires are a great investment for any vehicle owner. Though good for giving your car a sporty look, low profile tires are made for long-lasting, safe navigation for the smarter driver. The term applies to distinguishably short aspect ratios upon certain tires. There is less cushioning between the rim and wires, whereas movement becomes very crisp and a bit coarse.

The wider tires will provide the driver with a more forceful cornering, and better stopping abilities as the tires are capable of being bigger (which will allow for the car to have bigger brakes). It may be the leading for a bumpy ride and it is important to follow protocol in obtaining low-profile tires for cars built for broader tires, but regions that harbor geography that is best-suited for advanced handling on the wheel make these tires a necessity. Tires can run a bit expensive, however—therefore, one may pose the all-important question: what differentiates a cheap low profile tire for sale from an expensive one, and where can they be purchased?

Cheap low profile tires allow for the perfect RPM at lower mileage. They often last just as long as pricier tires, and are just as safe and dependable. Going out of the comfort zone of many drivers, famously American-made tires such as Bridgestone and Goodyear are often not the most economically sound choice—one may find themselves paying over $500 per tire in popular North American brands. One may find a cheaper investment whilst satisfying their needs in foreign (specifically Japanese, Chinese, and Korean) brands such as Yokohoma, Double Coin and Ching Ching. Oftentimes, these brands go for $200-400 per tire and one can save $100 at the very least by breaking loyalty to American brands. For those that are stubborn, BFGoodrich is also an underrated brand of tire dealers known to sell manageable prices on cheap, low profile tires. A well-known French brand of tires by the name of Michelin is often rumored to be dependable and cheap.

Considering the methods of ordering good low profile tires at manageable prices is as important as considering the brand and price. Approaching a private tire dealer to negotiate pricing and brand based upon your vehicle’s needs may be a better (and overall more beneficial) option as opposed to ordering directly from unreliable online sources from websites that aren’t necessarily trustworthy or dedicated to driving and maintaining vehicles. Online forums such as classadrivers.com and carsforums.com may also be helpful in finding those who have tire experience in multiple brands—websites such as these even breed a few good dealers and sellers quite often. Another way to go about catching great reviews and deals on cheap low profile tires is subscribing to vehicle-centered magazines. ‘Tires Review’ and ‘Truck and Trailer’ are great go-to magazines in seeking out the best low profile tire deals (oftentimes foreign).

Cheap low profile tires are the best way to go in terms of driving safely, no matter the climate or geography of the area one has to endure. There are multiple brands and methods in which one can make a price-manageable, worthy investment in tires that will provide their vehicle with the best endurance, controllability, and navigation possible. When driving, safety for all parties involved is the number-one concern. Obtaining cheap, low profile tires are certainly one of the best ways to go about ensuring such.

Here are some reasons why low profile tires aren’t a good choice for a snowy day.

As you know low profile tires rotate faster than standard tires, and because of that it’s much harder to get grip on snow. Also wide tires have to plow a wide path through snow to make way, where narrower tires have an much easier time to do that.

Tip: It’s also a good idea to lower your tire pressure when driving in snow to widen the area of rubber that meets the surface and thus get that much more grip.

I’ve added a fun video for you to see what happens when you aren’t using proper tires to drive in snow. Enjoy

Without a doubt, low profile tires look so much better than standard ones. For this reason alone, many people make the switch. It’s because people like the look of bigger wheels, and to compensate for the ratio, lower profiles, or sidewalls are required. Shiny looking alloy wheels sparkle in the light, as they turn. They get noticed out on the street. People turn their heads.

But it is not just about the look. It’s about the feel. Driving with low profile tires gives a closer grip on the road. Turning corners can be done confidently, and the vehicle sits more stable on the road. This sort of comfort whilst driving is extremely satisfying to many people. Because of the low sidewall, there is less flex in the tire as it travels, and this is what gives it more stability and traction.

There is a downside to this though. Because you have less sidewall, there is less rubber available to absorb the bumps and potholes we generally encounter driving on a daily basis. So it is necessary to watch that the rims don’t bend too much, under rough conditions. Generally we will experience a bumpier ride, unless of course, we compensate for this by using better suspension.

It’s also best to be particularly careful when parking the vehicle with low profile tires fitted, since it is possible to gouge the side of the rim from the concrete curb. However, some tires come with small lips around them, as a protection for this.

Some road surfaces can cause a higher level of road noise when using low profile tires, but this is dependent on the actual surface.

And to be completely safe rather than sorry, low profile tires are more dangerous in snow, and give less resistance to aquaplaning.

But at the end of the day, or, at the end of the road, it is a personal choice, all things considered.

Now lets sum up the pros and cons:

Pros

What exactly are low profile tires?

Low profile basically means the distance between where the rubber of the tire meets the road, and where the tire meets the wheel or metal rim. You can imagine an old farm tractor or a heavy cattle truck as having high profile tires, and a sleek sports car as having low profile tires. The correct word to use is sidewall height. Low profile tires have a short sidewall height.

The inspiration behind choosing low profile tires comes down to two important factors, namely appearance and performance.

Lets talk about appearance

Firstly, appearance is an important reason why people choose low profile tires. They look so much more sleek and sexy than standard tires. They make a statement. They say, ‘look at me’. They provide style, they enhance the overall look of the car, they feel better to drive with, and to many people, this is extremely important.

The performance factor

When it comes to performance, it is a matter of personal choice of the driver whether to use tires with a short sidewall height or just use standard tires. Drivers will chose the former version of tires because they provide better handling on the road, and the driver feels a more crisp connection with the road. This is also noticeable when turning corners, since the low profile tires tend to ‘hug’ the road more and provide greater control for the driver. There is a greater response through the steering wheel which is a pleasure to many people whilst driving.

Their popularity can also be attributed to the greater stability they provide. This is because the treads and grooves on the tires are closer together which eliminates any smooth patches. These smooth patches are what wear out quickest, therefore it is a common occurrence that tires with low profiles have an improved tread life, and wear much better and last longer.

Because there is less rubber used in these tires, naturally the weight in these is lower, which means the vehicle has an overall reduced weight, which improves the momentum of the vehicle. Also because less rubber is used, they are generally less expensive than standard tires. It is also fact that low profile tires rotate faster than standard ones, which can have an impact on fuel consumption, (consuming more fuel), however it is possible to modify the drive train to accommodate the changes in the revolutions per minute (RPM). For more detailed information you should look at low profile tires pros and cons.

How to fit low profiles?

When considering whether to fit low profiles, there are a number of other aspects that need to be taken into consideration. Firstly, what is the size recommendation of the tire for the vehicle? Vehicles are designed to take a specific tire size only. And what about the optimum inflation pressure of the tire? Each vehicle has been designed to withhold a maximum weight, and its axle systems can’t take any more than this. Will using different tires compromise this in any way? Is the vehicle going to be continually used to transport 6 – 10 people? What is the tire load capacity? Is the vehicle designed for rugged handling or smooth handling?

These are the sorts of questions that need to be answered correctly. This is where an expert in the knowledge of tires is able to advice correctly depending on each individual situation. It comes back to the saying, that ‘one size does not fit all’. There are a variety of factors that have a direct influence on whether using low profile tires are the best option. As well as that, when making the decision to use low profiles, one must be aware that it is not advisable to mix low profile tires with standard tires, that there has to be a complete set of four, of one type or the other.

It’s also important to consider the down side of using low profile tires. Whilst these are few in numbers, it removes any future disappointment once fitted with the tires. Often because there is less cushioning between the road and the actual rim, this causes a greater bump when hitting any potholes and such like on the road. The suspension needs to do more work to absorb the shock. This can result in more acute wear and tear on the sidewall as it is pounded more, by these bumps.

Also low profile tyres are less suitable when driving in snow.

However these matters sink into insignificance as soon as we begin to enjoy the great pleasure of driving with low profile tires.
